With all of the business and marketing jargon floating around, it can be a challenge, especially for newly-minted marketers, to get up to speed and successfully implement content marketing strategies. One of the most important ideas to understand is the content marketing funnel.

If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry. Below is a crash course on the basics you need to use the content funnel to create the right content for your audience.

What is a content marketing funnel?

A content marketing funnel is a grandiose way of visualizing the process your prospects go through in order to ultimately purchase your product or service.

How is it different than a sales funnel?

At the most basic level, it is not different. Like a sales funnel, prospects within a content funnel go through different stages – awareness, interest, action – that ultimately result in a sale.

A content marketing funnel supports the sales funnel by determining which content should be used at each stage to promote the right type of action. For example, we recommend companies use news commentaries or blog posts at the awareness stage of the funnel.

These content types are meant to introduce new visitors to your brand. Their goal is to attract their interest enough to entice them to return to your website, therefore moving them further along the sales funnel towards the interest stage.

Effective content marketers develop a content plan to ensure that they apply the right type of content to the right stage of the funnel. Additionally, a content plan helps ensure there is enough content planned for each funnel stage.

A thorough content plan should include personas for each prospect type that the content marketing funnel is built to address. Each persona should include the buying desires of the prospect along with key pain points, which should then be tied into the content plan.

What are the three levels of the funnel?

When you are trying to acquire new customers, there are three goals (levels) that those prospects want to achieve:
